You will, without a doubt, never hear or see
anything like Son Lux.
On the cutting edge of music, this american experimental band, composed of Ryan Lott (vocals, keyboards), Ian Chang (drums) and Rafiq Bhatia (guitar), uses sound to cleverly communicate powerful and well thought ideas in a very unusual way.
Originally a solo project led by the multi-instrumentalist Ryan Lott and since 2015 a trio, Son Lux has a unique sound that can not really be confined to one music genre. Indeed, the group never stops reaching new horizons never explored before, while being influenced by rock, pop, classical, jazz and electronic music production.
Son Lux is particularly impressive for their way to navigate through soundscapes to find perfection and their ability to attribute a meaning to every note and moment of a song. It seems like their music is just really pleasing to hear and process. The band finds a perfect balance in their sound to satisfy our most profound auditory and emotional needs, by using just the right notes to carry us to their parallel universe. Every detail counts for this american trio. From their fine poetry, relayed by their music, to the visual interpretation, everything is thought to be the most percussive possible. “Dream State”, from their latest album released in 2018, “Brighter Wounds”. The video was created by The Made Shop, a design firm working with Son Lux since 2011.

From a more musical perspective, the band stays as impressive. The rhythmic section is often incredibly hard, given that Ian Chang, Son Lux’s drummer, studied jazz music (and is also very talented). Though, rhythms always fit the song and do not overrun it, thanks to a vast and uncommon use of rests, in combination with complex rhythmic figures like septuplets. Ryan Lott, singer of the band, has an amazing technique and his composition skills are undeniably amazing and unique. The melodies created are very unusual, thus impressive to us. The guitarist, Rafiq Bhatia, being a real virtuoso, is capable of inserting guitar riffs really well in Son Lux’s unorthodox songs. This is a great example of level of complexity of their songs.

How do they achieve "perfection"? Son Lux members are courageous, hard-workers and do not limit themselves to anything. They explore and are perfectionists. They explore until they find the right note, the right word or the right image to translate their thoughts into art. Yet exploration can be scary, the trio always comes back with an innovating, creative and unique way to convey their ideas. This also applies to many other aspects of life and that is why Son Lux is such an inspiring group of artists.
