Worlds 2018

Each year, League of Legends, one of the most popular video game in the world, organize the biggest esports event, it is called Worlds.

How does it work?

Each summer and spring, teams of 4 differents regions play competitions to win their place in the Worlds qualifications by also winning first in their region. The 4 main regions are Nort America, Europe, Korea and China also known as NA LCS (LoL Championship Series of Nort America), EU LCS (LoL Championship Series of Europe), LCK (LoL Championship of Korea) and LPL (LoL Pro League).

The spring season gives the team a chance to get Championship Points that can give you a place in the qualifications too. If you are one of the team with the most points at the end of both seasons, you will get a chance to participate in Worlds. When you get first place in the summer split, you are automatically qualify for a spot in Group Stage. The third team that gets qualify with the Championship Points goes in the Play-In Stage.

Play-In Stage:
The Play-In Stage is compose of 12 teams divided in 4 groups. Each group is fill with teams that are randomly draw into a pool (like a bingo). Because there's 3 teams per group, teams get to play twice versus the teams in their group. The team of each group that has the less victories after playing 4 times get kicked out of the game while the 2 teams standing will be affronting each other into a best of 5.

Group Stage:
The Group Stage is where the best teams all over the world get qualify. Composed of 12 teams plus 4 winning teams from Play-In Stage, the Group Stage will be compose of 4 groups of 4 teams. These teams will affront each other in a Double Round-Robin, where every team gets to play versus every other team in their group. Of course, the groups are made randomly. But, because the group stage is composed not only the first teams but also the second teams. So 2 teams of the same region can't be draw in the same group. After all the games, the worst 2 teams of each group will get kicked out and the 8 winning teams will go in the Knockout Stage.

Knockout Stage:
The Knockout Stage is the final stage where 8 teams are qualify in quarterfinals. Teams will be randomly draw and will play a best of 5 to move in the semifinals. And then it will end with the finals.

About Worlds 2018

This year, The Worlds 2018 will be in South Korea. The Play-In Stage will be played in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. The Group Stage will be played in Busan and the Knockout Stage will be played in three different cities: Busan, Gwangju and  Incheon. For the first time, Vietnam will make their first appearance and will already advance in Group Stage from having the highest-ranking at MSI (Mid-Season Invitational). This year, SKT T1, also known as the best team in the world who won 3 times Worlds in the history of League of Legends, won't appear on the Stage because of their bad season.

Results before the Finals

After more than 3 weeks of intense games, we saw an unusual path in the competition. Normally, China and Korea would "destroy' everyone, but this year is a year of change. The best team of Korea actually went last in the Group Stage. That gave unpopular teams a chance to go in quarterfinals. What happened in quarterfinals was more surprising. The best and the second team of China actually lost by an NA team and an EU team. Nobody was expecting these defeats.
