Are drugs really that bad?

By Charles Brassard

Hello! Since Marijuana is going to be legalized in Canada this year let me talk about the good sides of drugs. I'm principally going to talk about Marijuana in this text since this is a very good example of a drug that is going to be legalized.

You might already be wondering: How can marijuana help? To answer that question let’s look inside a study conducted by Ian Hamilton, Addiction in 2017. They state that THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is harmful and the cause of the psychosis and it’s also responsible for the effect of being "high." They proved that the THC rate increased from 4% in 1995 to 12% in 2014! Another study has shown that the more marijuana you consume the higher of developing psychosis.

But what is a psychosis? Psychosis is a mental disorder that causes hallucinations and delusions. In another study by Frisher M et al, Schizophrenia Research in 2009 said that Schizophrenia cases have been stable even if marijuana uses increased. Unless you already have a high risk of psychosis thus increasing the risk. To conclude this segment you have to realize that with the legalization of the Marijuana there will be strict regulations to ensure minimal risk for everybody.

A study in 2015 has stated that 45% of users of marijuana have at least used others hard drug once in their life… But it seems like the problem start if you smoke a cigarette before 15 years old you were 80% more likely to use illegal drugs a study done by Loi S et al. Journal of Addiction Diseases in 2000. Other studies like in 2017 show that if you smoke before 12 and 17 years you are three more likely to drink illegal and seven more times likely to use hard drugs and marijuana. But you need to know that the drug addiction mainly comes from a difficult childhood, genetic factors, depression…

Now let me show you a "Marijuana" crisis situation that happened in Portugal between 2001 and 2012. Portugal was very poor during this era and drugs were commonly used and caused a drug problem. They did something incredible; they legalized possession and use of ALL illegal drugs legalized! Portugal officials also launched a health campaign that resulted in a significant decrease of regular drug usage from 44% in 2001 to 28% in 2012 and HIV infections and overdoses deaths went from 80 to 16 per year!

One of my last arguments is that 10% of marijuana users become addicted this is directly linked to THC level. A study was done in Amsterdam shown that from 2001 and 2017 said that every increase of 1% in THC will bring 16 more people in treatment! This is incredible, but there’s a big problem if you take drugs during your development is bad but more search is needed. To conclude here’s some statistic to show you that marijuana is not that bad as you may think;

As you can see, Marijuana's addictive potential is still way lower and causes way fewer deaths. Abuse of alcohol worldwide resulted in 3.3 million deaths last year and smoking 6 million while marijuana. To conclude this research; legalizing marijuana and other types of drugs must be done correctly to ensure safer utilization of it and make research on it easier.
