An Introduction to K-Dramas

by Juliette Dumont

If you're looking to start watching your very first K-Drama but don't know where to start, this article might be a helpful guide for you.

What is a K-Drama?

The term "K-Drama" is simply used to describe a Korean T.V. series. They vary in genre and length just like American series. K-Dramas are becoming more popular internationally. Netflix currently has dozens of them available.

What to watch according to your interests.

If you're looking for something that will make you laugh but still has a serious plot, I strongly recommend Strong Girl Bong-Soon. This show is about a young woman who has super-human strength. She is looking for a job in which her powers won't get in the way of her success. Strong Girl Bong-Soon is filled with hilarious action sequences, has an intriguing kidnapper story line, and a captivating love triangle. Viewers of any age and gender can enjoy this drama. All 16 episodes are available on Netflix.

If you want to watch something that is historical and full of plot-twists, Hwarang is perfect for you. This series follows the story  of the hidden heir to the throne and a group of men, selected by the queen and her counsellors, that are trained to protect the kingdom. The story is unpredictable and interesting. This K-Drama contains spectacular combat scenes and some funny moments while maintaining a serious tone. Also, many famous K-pop idols and actors are in it. Men and women alike will love this drama. It currently isn't available on Netflix, so I recommend watching it on Viki.

Finally, if you're into romantic and slightly cheesy series, I suggest you watch Boys Over Flowers. After a coincidental event, Geum Jan-di, a high school girl who isn't afraid to speak out for herself, is invited to attend Shinhwa High, the school where only the children of the richest people of South Korea can attend. Getting involved with F4, the most popular and influential  boys of the school is the beginning of not only many problems, but also love. This series is both humorous and emotional. It is inspired by a Japanese manga which has been adapted by many countries. Boys Over Flowers is also available on Netflix.

Whether you're looking for something new to try or you're learning Korean, any reason is good to discover the addictive world of K-Dramas.
