When I have time to kill, I like to dream. Dream of all the trips I want to do and literally just start to plan my future expeditions. So I do so and I am sadly always turned off because I don’t know where to begin to travel the cheapest way. This article goes to all of the dreamers that are crazy for traveling but don’t have unfortunately that big of a budget.
My first tip is travel out of season. If you travel during summer or Christmas, cheap flights are rare. However, there are low cost companies like Air Transat that have special, cheap summer flights. If you travel out of season then any flight could do the job, plus it won’t be as crowded as vacation weeks. Having said that, the earlier you buy your ticket the cheaper they are.
My second tip is chose wisely your accommodation. The accommodation is the hardest thing to find because of the location, the price and the cleanliness. You will have to start looking months ahead. I would recommend you to choose either a nice youth hostel or a welcoming Airbnb.
My third tip is embrace public transportation. When you travel as a backpacker you do not have a car so for the travelling you either use apps like BlaBlaCar or public transportations. This means avoiding taxis! If you chose overnight trains or buses it makes you save money that you would have spent on a hostel.
My fourth tip, do not eat away your cash. I admit that restaurants are a must when you travel but I would recommend that you chose to eat out just one meal per day. For breakfast and lunch or dinner just go on a local market or a grocery store and try out local products. If you have access to any kitchen, you can cook yourselves good meals. If you do not, choose food that doesn’t need cooking like sandwiches, raw veggies or fruits and go eat on public places like parks or markets.
My fifth tip, pack properly. If you pack well you will not have to spend money on things that you have either forgotten or just never thought of. Thereby you will have this money to buy yourselves some souvenirs.
These are all of my tips. I hope that it will help and inspire you at least a little bit. If you have any questions leave them in the comments!
