Running all the way to Montreal

Every spring, since a few years ago, the Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie organises a non competitive race. In fact, the goal is to run all the way to Montréal, which is 270 kilometers, with your school teammates.

I had already experienced the event while I was at another school, in secondary 3. Fortunately, this year, at Saint-Charles-Garnier , we made an agreement with Québec High School to share the pass to participate. So, like Romane explained, 37 students joined forces to motivate each other and to train for the big weekend.

At 6:15 in the morning, all the participating students were seated in the bus, ready to give their maximum effort, good attitude and sence of adventure. In one of Québec city's most famous place, all of the 6000 runners from all regions of Québec were standing in front of the Parlement, waiting for the big start. As soon as the confetti cannons blew, we all started sprinting from exitement. Later on, we switched to two per two relays. Oh, what the fun we had! By running approximately 2 to three km by trip, we where going out of the bus once per hour. Many hours later, we stopped at Trois-Rivières. There was food, places to sleep and clean bathrooms. These things were so important to us, tired runners, because, in a bus, with 40+ other people, you don't always eat what you want, sleep as you like and use the bathroom as you need. Then, when we started driving again, at night, students were running, giving each other relays. The next morning, even if everybody had a maximum of four hours of sleep, the energy in the bus was wonderful. We were all cheering on our teammates and congratulating ourselves. When the trip to Montréal was coming to an end, we wanted to be the first school to cross the finish line. That goal really brought us, students from secondary one to five and teachers, together. The overall activity was such a blast. I would definitely do it again.

Looking back on the adventure we had, I think that, as a school, it has really helped to make new friends and to get to know the people near you. In parallel with that, I also think that having the chance to run 270km with your teammates is incredible.
