Music

Music is a thing that most of us need in our everyday life. It has been on earth
since the beginning of times and I don’t think it will ever disappear. As you may have
noticed, it’s hard to find new sounds and a new wave for the songs. It’s getting
harder and harder because we think everything has been done. So many artists will
fall in what we call “mainstream” because it’s easy and people already love it.
That’s why I want to present to you a excellent band that some describe as
“experimental” but who, at least, think outside of the box.

Son Lux is a three men band: Ryan Lott, Rafiq Bhatia, and Ian Chang. This year
(february 9th to be precise) they released their fifth album: Brighter Wounds.
I think what I like most about this band is the eccentric sounds that we don’t
usually hear in other songs higher in the charts. Another good aspect is the drums.
I’ve brought an expert to help us understand a little bit more about that. He has
played with some of the fineness artists of quebec like Claude Bégin, I’m of course
talking about Émile Painchaud. “In Son Lux's music, drums add a unique feel to their
songs. Often, the beat seems a bit off or delayed, creating an odd effect that we
aren't used to hear. Ian Chang uses particular rhythms to create this effect. For
example, in the song "The Fool You Need", he is playing septuplets (7 notes per beat),
a rhythmic figure that we almost never see. The band also uses rests really well,
something that we don't really see anymore in music. In Son Lux, rhythms are never
boring to listen and always have something particular to them, and that is what I like
from it.”

I hope this has convinced you to go see this new album who I think is way to underrated.
