Jean-Christophe Dubé hasn’t been drawing for a long time, but he surely has the power to go a long
way with his newborn skills. His simple yet impressive drawings easily catch the attention of the
viewer, leaving us anything but indifferent. Let's take a deeper look into his work.
I first questioned him on the matter. He then confessed to me
that the classes being extremely difficult, he had trouble
understanding and thus felt discouragement fill his very being.
But when we see how far he's come by changing this struggle
into a new mean of expression, we easily understand that the
difficulties encountered were a blessing in disguise!
The artist next explained his approach. If you study his
characters, despite them being of various shapes, they all
share some distincts features. You'll find them having the same
narrow, long nose This trait is actually Jean-Christophe's
representation of himself, as these characters are a depiction
of his state. Another important element are the big empty eyes.
They show expressively his lack of understanding of the maths
problems, on which he draws on.
can go far beyond the complexity of a high school subject. J-C, like most of
his classmates call him, insisted on the fact that he views his work as an
attempt to represent his lack of comprehension of life in general, something
that most teenagers from every place and every era can relate to. It is hard
to find our place in a world that wasn't necessarily built for us, moreover not
by us. But worries about this matter can decrease with age, and just like
Jean-Christophe's characters are drawn on notebooks he probably won't
ever use again, we'll carry on and forget about our primary desire of
understanding.
I hope that others keep cheering for him and encourage him to never stop
perfecting his skills. Simplicity, if it can convey meaning, is a tool every
artist can desire, and this man has it, it's undeniable.
Keep on drawing, J-C!
