HUMAN TRAFFICKING

We would like to bring your attention on a problem that affects the whole world population including  Quebec’s. We’re talking about the trafficking of human beings for sexual purposes and the dangers related to it.

To put you in the context, we are going to take a quick look over the current situation happening in the world. The human traffic exists in the majority of the countries. For example, in Brazil, we count more than 2659 victims of this illegal activity. We also count 3308 victims in the United States, 10 017 in Pakistan,  1030 in Nigeria and the list goes on and on and on. There are even victims in Canada; 111 according to the official data, because it is important to know that not all the victims are registered.

The human traffic is very dangerous for the victims, among whom several  are minor girls. The victims face several dangers; the majority are being given drugs and being exploited and are afterward put into debt by the drugs use which they were forced to take and that they have to pay. Furthermore, the life expectancy of the girls who are in the human traffic for sexual purposes is of 5 years. The victims of the human traffic are raped, isolated of their family and their friends and are transported in other provinces, sometimes other countries.

Now that you know about the victims of this activity, we are going to make a brief portrait of the aggressors. They are classified in two categories; the procurers and the consumers. The procurers, so called "pimp", are generally a member of a street gang or a criminal group. Contrary to what we could think, they do not use violence to recruit the girls but instead use manipulation. The recruiter  is going to make the girl fall in love with him by giving her presents and by complimenting her. He is going to act like a real gentleman. The “pimps” recruit almost everywhere: in youth centers, in parks, close friends of schools, in subways, on the social networks, etc. The consumers, as for them, are the people who take advantage of the services given by the victims of the human traffic.

There are tracks of possible solutions to reduce the number of victims of this traffic. In the first place, the human traffic is an illegal activity punished in justice so when the proofs allow it, it is possible to arrest the recruiters and  put them in prison. On the other hand, the human traffic is not often punished in Canada so it is important to improve the judicial system concerning the punishments related to this problematic.
