Highlights from the Spanish Grand Prix
By Sebastian Mihai Ionascu
This weekend, the Spanish Grand Prix was taking place at the “Circuit de Catalunya” near Barcelona. Twenty pilots were racing to have more points, so they could become this year’s Formula 1 champion. It was a very important race because Sebastian Vettel, a pilot for the Scuderia Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton, a pilot for the Mercedes AMG Petronas team and the last year champion, have almost the same amount of points. The battle for the champion title is far from over.
A few seconds after the start of the race, Romain Grosjean, a French pilot for the Haas F1 Team, lost control of his car and he thought that he could take back his position by executing a drift. Unfortunately for him, Grosjean pushed too much on the accelerator, so he drifted directly into Nico Hülkenberg (Renault) and Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso). According to the F1 official application, Romain will have a “three-place grid penalty for the next round in Monaco”.
Later in the race, Kimi Räikkönen (Scuderia Ferrari) has easily been overtaken by Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing). Kimi had some technical issues for the first time this season. The cars made by the Scuderia Ferrari were known to be reliable cars, their mechanics will surely prevent this from happening again.
Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish Grand Prix due to a big strategy mistake from the Scuderia Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel. Vettel was called in the pit by the Scuderia to change the car’s tires during a yellow flag. The German pilot lost too much time in the pits, while Hamilton was further widening the gap. Lewis was not worried about the rest of the race, he easily won it.
