Behind The Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie
The man
Who, in the first place, started this big project and why? Pierre Lavoie, native from Saguenay, discovered his passion for triathlon at 26 years old. Before he started this sport, he didn’t think he was good in sports in general. It was to seduce its current partner, Lynne Routhier, that he started running.
Following his discovery of triathlon, he jumped into the Ironman world. Pierre participated ten times to the Ironman world championship in Hawaii. He was three times world champion in his category and he even broke the world record in 2005. It’s this impressive sport background that allowed him to do The Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie.
Pierre Lavoie lost two of his children due to a hereditary illness called lactic acidosis. This disease is particularly present in Saguenay. Pierre wanted to raise awareness to this disease in his region and to raise funds for research. He organised a lot of events, then launched the first Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie in 2008 with the help of Germain Thibault.
Since the first edition, a lot of people took part of the cycling and the running challenges. The tenth anniversary of this event has been celebrated this year.
The schools
Behind The Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie, there are all the participants. Indeed, this year, 37 students from our school took part of the Grand Défi. With the help of six extremely motivated teachers, the students attended from one to four trainings a week in preparation to the challenge.
This training process started during winter through the snow and unpleasant weather. Two times a week, the students would arrive early to school and go to the morning practice. There were also two trainings after school. There was a lot of motivation needed to continue the preparation but the students of Saint-Charles never gave up!
All the participants of Saint-Charles-Garnier were well prepared and ready for the weekend of the event. The six teachers also gave to the participants ideas of meal and recipes related to the training program and tips on everything related to running.
In the end
The brilliant idea of Pierre Lavoie, to raise awareness and to make teenagers be active, is positive. Behind The Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie, there is sure the founder, but there are also all the people who committed themselves to this challenge and that dedicate everything to succeed. The Grand Défi doesn’t just took place between Québec and Montréal, it took place in all the schools that decided to help their students moove.
