Alcohol has been part of the human experience ever since humans have been considered humans, with archeological evidence of intentional fermentation going back to the beginning of early civilization in 10,000 BC. And ever since, it’s grown into the most widely consumed drug in the world. After a recent adventure, I have been asking myself to what makes this drug so hated and loved.
Pros:
So first of all, alcohol has some obvious benefits, as a depressant, it lowers the neurotransmission levels in your brain causing a reduction in simulation (stimulants such as methamphetamine, cocaine and Adderall will have the opposite effect). This has the effect of causing euphoria, reduced anxiety and improved sociability, what’s not to like in a drug that makes you happy, less worried and charismatic. There are other effects that are a bit less fun but nevertheless useful this includes stupor, amnesia (to forget all the stupid actions you did while wasted) and a highly boosted sense of confidence in what you can do (to ask that cute girl out on a date).
Cons:
On the other hand, ethanol will not always be your friend. To your body, it is literally a poison that can and will kill you if used in excess. With a small quantity your fine motor skill and your judgment are impaired. A higher concentration will lead to loss of balance, blurred vision, profound confusion and vomiting. And in the extreme usage can lead to coma and death. Long-term use can result in multiple cases of neurological and of
liver diseases, especially with alcoholics. There is also some danger coming from driving or doing activities that go against rationality.
A bit less tempting now?
So my view on alcohol is to try to find the golden mean described by Aristotle, which is to find a balance between extremes, finding the sweet spot between all out debauchery and sobriety. This will allow you to reap the many benefits while diminishing the cons.
