What is the story behind YWCA Canada?

YWCA is the first women’s multi-service organisation that was implemented in our country. Their mission is to
advance gender equality for women and girls with informed advocacy and a deep seated members association.
We know what YWCA is today, but how did it all start?

In 1870, Agnes Blizzard and Adelaine Hoodles saw to the creation of the first Canadian YWCA in Saint-Johns.
Soon enough, other associations were inaugurated: Toronto - 1873, Montreal - 1874, Quebec City and
Halifax - 1875.  Back then, the Young Women’s Christian Organisation was more related to religion. Still, their
goals were similar to the actual ones. Indeed, they wished to increase the employment and educational
opportunities for women. Today, the consortium has no religious allegiance, but the name remained the same.

As the years passed, the association grew bigger implementing libraries, nurse training, homes for delinquent
girls, cooking schools and much more. Following their first annual meeting in 1895, Adelaine Hoodles
said:  “We will be the greatest and strongest group of young women ever formed. I mean of women, by women
and for women.”  After a lot of new projects, the YWCA published Fresh Start, a book for women in abusive
situations. The documentary was translated in many languages and an enormous amount of copies have been
sold.

Last year, YWCA Canada hosted the National Young Women’s Leadership Summit to celebrate the impact of
women in building the Canada that we live in actually. Since their implementation in Canada and for many years
ahead, the YWCA association will forge the women of tomorrow and help them to become the leaders of our
world. There is no doubt about the future of the movement and about how it positively impacts communities
around our country.
