Review of The Stanford Prison Experiment

Review of The stanford Prison experiment

In 1971, Philip Zimbardo, psychologist, decided to conduct a experiment on the psychological effect of power. He simulated a prison to understand how the abuse start in these conditions.  The guard and the prisoners were chosen randomly between a selected group of students. These students were paid 15$ a day, for two weeks. Little did he know, the experiment would not last this long.

In the movie, the main character, Philip zimbardo, played by Billy Crudup, is the psychologist running the experiment. He is helped by other students in the psychology department. Together, they watch how the guards react to a sudden given type of authority. We also see, from a very early point on, how it affects the prisoners. The simulated prison is really affecting their sense of perception and how they lived before.  The prisoners have different types of personality so you can really understand how it affects their way of reacting to authority and unjustify punishment. We have to remember throughout the movie that these are just kids. Some of them, like 8612, are more targeted and will find , by any means, a way out of this simulation.

Without a doubt, this experiment, was a revolution in the psychological advancement and for me, this movie was a a revolution on my perception of the world. You can really understand from the character’s evolution how an environment affects you and your mental health. They all thought this would be easy, but they all ended up having some sorts of consequences. Being made in 1971, they all dress and act a little different than today, and that is something i really enjoyed because it was really well played. The way the characters change, not just the prisoners, but also the guards and the psychologists is really interesting. A lot of time, you really have to ask yourself some question like do i think they go to far? Would i be different? how would i react and what’s the best way to react? Since The Stanford Prison Experiment is was a real thing, you have to ask yourself how the real guys made it through. I really thought this was a beautiful, well-made movie. This movie was not about the camera, the music, the effects and other things like that, but really about the actors and the story.

Overall, i really loved how this turned out. It’s everything it should be and the message is clear. I wouldn't recommend it if your not in the mood to see some people’s soul break or if you a tiny fragile heart, but other than that, it’s a must.
