Review of Call Me by Your Name

By Adèle Joubert

A Peachy Summer

It is not often that we start with a movie and then choose to read the book. What usually happens, is that we read a book and then, see if the movie is as good as what we have read. I have never been more impressed to start with Call me by your name, a movie from Luca Guadagnino, and after, having the urge to read the book by Andre Aciman.

This is the story of two men blossoming towards each other, in a beautiful Italian town. Elios, young and clever,  cannot imagine what his life was before he met Oliver, the guest staying at his summer house. In this masterpiece, you will find the search for self understanding, a passion for knowledge and every heartbreaking thoughts of a first romance. This movie was created with great passion and was obviously being taken great care of. Since the movie is located in Italia, you have the chance to see through the eyes of a boy in love, the beautiful landscape of Lombardia. Not only is the visual outstanding, but the music, who I believe takes a big place in a film, makes us dream of being in every part of the movie. The overall quality was excellent and was everything i ever hope to look for to in a film. The technique was not amateur-like and it obviously got recognized because its nomination for several Oscars. What makes this story the most outstanding is the fact that it only brings the book up and won because of it. Call me by your name won Best Writing Adapted Screenplay in the 2018’s Oscar Ceremony. The book, which I cannot let down, is so pure and heartbreaking that I could not help but cry. Aciman’s writing is now my favourite thing on earth. I cannot begin to praise how good the book is, and how the movie reflects entirely the idea of the story, which is pretty rare.

Lastly, I would say that if you haven’t read the book or seen the movie, you haven’t lived. The intention behind every word was to make us appreciate everything we have the chance to experience. Both masterpieces are from the same story, which is the most passionate and pure story I have ever seen or read.
