An Electrifying Society

By Sandrine Babineau and Claire Pleau

In Quebec, the transport sector is the most hypertrophied emitter of greenhouse gases. Since 1990, 40% of the air pollutants we produce come from the tiresome use of automobiles. So have you ever thought that the electrification of transportation in Quebec could change in our current society? On October 8, the government announced that a 420 million investment will be made to promote the development of electric cars. From an economic and environmental point of view, this will bring positivism to our community.

In the sector of the economy, the project of electrification of automobiles will allow the creation of more than 5000 jobs in Quebec in the industrial sector. Owners of electric vehicles will not only save money, but they will help reduce oil imports. Drivers of electric cars will no longer need to worry about the fluctuation of oil prices. In addition, a consumer of an electric car protects money from his wallet, since electricity is less expensive than gasoline. Compared to gasoline-powered vehicles, the hybrid car has a lower cost of auto insurance and the government offers its drivers a favorable discount, such as the tax credit.

From an ecological perspective, this project aims to peddle the sale of electric vehicles in Quebec. To encourage the population to buy these, the government will install more than 785 public charging stations in the region and also making these devices accessible to all. This is to gradually replace petrol-based transportation with the impact of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Philippe Couillard wants to reduce by 2020, GHG production of 150,000 tons and 66 million fuels. Furthermore, the government wants to opt for new orientations of the territory in order to allow communities to set up environments focused on sustainable development. Based on my opinion, these maneuvers will be part of the solutions to heal our planet. Slowing global warming, reducing smog production in the troposphere and improving the quality of our air will be some positive impacts.

In conclusion, the electrification of transportation in Quebec will be a step forward in the obstinacy against air pollution and the environmental problems that we find now around the globe. It will increase the development of several sectors and promoting the presence of electric cars on our roads. Nevertheless, will we be the only ones to take these eco-responsible actions?
