A fresh “R”entrée

By Hypatia Behar-Gryl

This week, students all over the Quebec province will finally know if they were accepted in their first choice of CEGEP, their next school for the next two years or more. The stressful moment will only be lived by Quebec people, though. Indeed, the CEGEP system is not found in any other school system of the world.

The problem with CEGEPs resides in one main factor ; the R score, at the core of the CEGEP system.

The R score was made by Quebec, for Quebec, and is only recognized in Quebec universities. It is used as a selection criteria, often decisive in this admission process following CEGEP. Basically, this R score is made to evaluate a student’s academic capacity, but to also compare it with the capacity of the group the said student is in. In fact, if you’re an average student a in a strong group, you’re likely to have a high R score. But if you’re a strong student a in a weak group, your R score will be lower. Indeed, it does not really represent a student’s capacity, seeming to focus more on performances inside of a group instead of on a individual, context-less performance.

Taking all this factor in, the academic stress put on students can be unbearable for some, and we can rightly wonder if the system is efficient as it is or if we should change it to, maybe, an education format that is not only proper to Quebec, but that has been proved as productive and efficient in other countries. There is no good reasons to have an unique grade rating system if it can impact negatively on the student’s future without the student having anything to do with it.

While hoping that the majority of students will receive a favorable answer to their admission requests, let’s also maybe wish for a change in the system! And if it does not come, then let’s wish all the best to any future student.
