Every year, our school Saint Charles-Garnier receives several groups of Mexican students, boys and girls. They are teenagers like us. They come from different schools located in several states of Mexico. Some groups of students will stay in Quebec city for 6 months. Others will stay among us for up to one year. They come here to learn French and to familiarise themselves with a new culture. French is their third language. They already know the basic of the language, but they want to improve it some more.

Their stay in Quebec City represents a good opportunity to experience new things, meet new people and learn more about our society. In every aspect, they will experience the life of a regular Quebec teenager. Each Mexican student will leave within a host family, among others teenagers and family members. They will taste our typical cuisine. They will participate in school activities, play sports, like volleyball, and integrate school teams. Of course, they will attend several parties and have a good time with us.
The Mexican students will also experience extraordinary things. In this regards, they are very fortunate. Unlike most of us during school time, they will make several school trips and visit different parts of the province of Quebec. Some will also travel with their host family. Some will even travel in other provinces or visit the United States. Winter might come as a big shock for them, since most of them have never seen snow of their life.
Quebec and Mexico are probably more similar than we think. Both locations share the same religious background. They are both issued from European culture and also have indigenous roots.
But those two cultures also present some differences and Mexican students will teach us about their own culture. Among other things, we have been told that education in Mexico is more open-minded. The Mexican students say that they have more privileges. For example, they can leave their class without any consequence. In all classes, they have a radio and teenagers can use it. These are some examples of what is to come during the following months. We look forward to learning more about our new friends.
