CSCG's Cross-Country Team

by Béatrice Gilbert and Romane Gauvreau

Saint-Charles-Garnier is a secondary school College that offers various sports to its student body. Whatever you are good at, or want to try, they have it. But today, we want to talk about one sport in particular.

Cross-country made its entry here, at school, a long time ago and since then, it has been a very popular sport.

This year, we welcome a new cross-country coach, Maggie Proulx. Here is an interview we did with her.

Why do you like cross-country?
  • First of all, it’s an individual sport, so you can only compare yourself with your previous performances. It avoids jealousy towards other teammates.

Are you coaching other teams or schools right now?
  • Right now, I am coaching here in cross-country and on Sundays with the Club d’Athlétisme de Québec. Previously, I worked for Cégep Garneau (cross-country) for two years. And, the new thing is that I’m going to be one of the men’s basketball coach, here at Saint-Charles.

What do you love more about coaching here?
  • At Saint-Charles, students are passionate about their activities. Plus, they are super energetic, which makes me happy.

What are your predictions for the cross-country season this year?
  • Well, it’s my first time coaching secondary school students so I really don’t know. But, the good thing is that I think that we are a really good group that is going to do its maximum to perform, and we’ll see.

What would you say to invite students to try cross-country this year?
  • I would say that it’s a sport that anybody can perform in ; it’s a group where everybody goes at their running pace. I think that it’s the sport that can gather the most people because you don’t have to have any talent to succeed, just passion.

Like Maggie said, cross-country is a sport that anybody can do.  You just have to be passionate. This year, we are around 28 students in the team. That is going to make us a strong team at our first meet, in October.

Last year, in that same competition, at the ASIP (gathering of all private schools in Capitale-Nationale and Chaudière-Appalache) we had really good results. Our sec. 3 and 4 girls won the banner. We also had 6 runners who qualified for the regionals and 2 for the provincials.

We invite all of you, students of Collège Saint-Charles-Garnier, to join us in the cross-country team this fall. You could be the next running star of the school… Who knows?
