Now that we’re back to school, a lot of things can make the students stress out: homework, exams, the new classes and much more. The thing is that if returning to school for a brand-new year can be stressful for everyone, just imagine how it feels for the secondary ones who just arrived from primary school. They don’t know how high school works, they have to make new friends and they discover a world that they have never seen before. That’s why there’s an old tradition at Collège Saint-Charles-Garnier that is the “Camp Trois-Saumons”.
At the camp, the secondary five students had the chance to be the counsellors/”pairs aidants” and to do a lot of activities with their secondary one group for 2 days such as rock climbing, rabaska, archery, hebertism and many more fun games, and they get to introduce them to high school. The activities allowed the students to get to know each other and create connections in another environment.
Secondary one students arrived on Thursday morning. From the moment they got out of the buses, they were in a summer camp atmosphere because all the counsellors were on fire, singing a lots of songs. After that, every team went in their own hut to store all the bags and 30 minutes later, everyone was at an activity like rabaska, archery and hebertism. All this took place in a festive atmosphere. For dinner, at the end of the day, we all ate a great meal. Around 7pm, we made a giant commando with all the teams. There were about 200 people and it was quite nice for all secondary ones, but also for the counselors. Before going to bed we went singing at the rotunda. Bedtime was harder in some huts due to the excitement of the new students.
We woke up early on Friday to have as long a day as possible and all this began with a good plate of waffles. All the groups had two activities in the morning and it’s at that moment that the counselors gave the young campers their “totems.” After lunch, it was time for one last activity and also to pack all luggage. We finished by taking a large group picture. At 2pm, it was, sadly, the moment to say goodbye to everyone and to go back to the College.
It was a wonderful experience for all the secondary ones but also for the counselors. When the groups arrived on Thursday morning, they were all shy and nobody really knew each other. However, only 24 hours later, groups were filled with friendship. The sentence we heard the most was “Can we stay a few more days please?” This shows that no one will forget this experience.
