A second year for Saint-Charles’s political committee

by Étienne-Alexandre Beauregard and Torben Johnson

Near the end of the last school year, a committee was founded at Saint-Charles to promote political engagement and stimulate the students’ reflexions on politics in Québec as well as Canada. In only a few months, the few members of the committee managed to organize a conference with Marie-Victorin MNA Catherine Fournier, who’s also the youngest woman to be a member of the National Assembly. The activity drew a sizeable crowd for an event at lunch time, attracting over 45 people to hear about Ms Fournier’s political career and how she managed to get elected at only 24 years of age.

This year, the committee wants to focus on inviting guest speakers, mostly politicians elected at the Québec National Assembly since they work two kilometres from the College on weekdays. Current plans involve Jean-François Roberge, Chambly MNA, ex-high school teacher and Coalition avenir Québec spokesman on education issues, as well as Martine Ouellet, Vachon MNA since 2010, ex-natural resources minister and current Bloc Québécois leader. If anyone wants to help organizing these conferences and the many others to come until the end of the school year, they’re very welcome to join the committee at the extracurricular activity kiosks later this September.
